Dediche imperiali su iscrizioni edilizie tardoantiche in Flaminia et Picenum: appunti per un’indagine da svolgere

Over the last decades scholars have investigated the deep changes in epigraphic habit in the 4th century, since the Tetrarchic period. Although economic and political difficulties affected for sure the Italian cities, they had nonetheless institutional, social and urbanistic continuity. Given this context, the author analyses the building inscriptions of Flaminia et Picenum. In total, they are only 6 documents: 2 concern bridges restorations and partage the scheme with the early imperial milestones, whereas 4 contain dedications to the sovereigns and appear as honorific inscriptions. Then it is hypothesized that, so milestones, building inscriptions too were used increasingly in the 4th century for paying homage to those, who held the power.

Negli ultimi decenni la dottrina ha indagato i profondi mutamenti che hanno interessato la pratica epigrafia nel iv secolo a partire dalla Tetrarchia; infatti, nonostante indubbie difficoltà economiche e politiche, le città italiane conobbero continuità istituzionale, sociale e urbanistica. A partire da questo contesto, l’autore si sofferma sulle iscrizioni edilizie della Flaminia et Picenum, in totale 6 documenti, fra i quali 2 riguardano il restauro di ponti e hanno lo schema dei miliari alto-imperiali, mentre gli altri 4 presentano delle dediche ai sovrani e si configurano come iscrizioni onorarie. Quindi, si formula l’ipotesi conclusiva che, al pari dei miliari, anche questo genere epigrafico fosse sfruttato sempre più nel IV secolo come occasione per veicolare l’omaggio verso chi deteneva il potere.
