Spirit possession, gender issues and musical practices: these are the main themes framing this second volume, which is part of a more extensive research exploring the relationship between ritual, music and gender in Morocco. This work provides an ethnographic analysis of women’s ritual and musical practices in the city of Meknes. It focuses on the mʿallmāt musical groups, where it is women – and sometimes effeminate men as well – who serve as musicians and ritual officiants. The main role of these groups is to play music to accompany the exclusively female possession rites. This study examines mʿallmāt’s traditions and ceremonies, women’s musical and poetic repertoires, personal experiences of rites participants. The careful examination of discourses and practices related to possession experiences, seeks to highlight the way in which the bond with the spirits refashion personal identity, meets personal and collective needs, and builds and steers interpersonal and gender relationships. Female spirit possession rituals provide a privileged arena for exploring the ways in which women protect or promote their interests, exercise their authority, and actively engage in creating exclusive spaces of expression and action. In addition, the focus on poetic repertoires compete to sheds light on otherwise overlooked aspects of the practices and voices of women.
Possessione, questioni di genere e pratiche musicali: questi sono i temi principali che inquadrano questo secondo volume di un’indagine più ampia, sulla relazione tra rito, musica e genere in Marocco. Questo lavoro fornisce un’analisi etnografica delle pratiche rituali e musicali delle donne nella città di Meknes. Si concentra sui gruppi musicali mʿallmāt, nei quali donne – e talvolta effeminati – agiscono come musicisti e officianti rituali. Il ruolo principale di questi gruppi è quello di accompagnare con la propria musica i riti di possessione di esclusiva pertinenza femminile. Questo studio esamina le tradizioni e le cerimonie dei gruppi mʿallmāt, i repertori musicali e poetici delle donne, le esperienze personali dei partecipanti ai riti. L’attento esame dei discorsi e delle pratiche relative alle esperienze di possessione mette in evidenza il modo in cui il legame con gli spiriti rimodella l’identità personale, soddisfa i bisogni personali e collettivi, e costruisce e orienta le relazioni interpersonali e di genere. I riti di possessione femminili forniscono un’arena privilegiata per esplorare i modi in cui le donne proteggono o promuovono i propri interessi, esercitano la propria autorità e si impegnano attivamente nella creazione di spazi esclusivi di espressione e azione. Inoltre, l’attenzione ai repertori poetici concorre a far luce su aspetti altrimenti inesplorati delle pratiche e delle voci delle donne.
