Confraternite, santi e spiriti. Indagini in Marocco. Parte I

This study is the first part of a more extensive research exploring the relationship between ritual, music and gender in Morocco, and which is articulated in two different but complementary books. This first book deals with the wider social and cultural context in which both male and female ritual practices are situated. Combining historical and ethnographic research, the text offers an overview of the cult of saints in Morocco, in order to both highlight the social and cultural depth, and to outline some important meanings linked to these cults. It also sets out the main characteristics, private and public ceremonies, and musical activities of the religious brotherhoods in Meknes. More specifically, those closely related to spirit possession cults, healing rituals and music: jilālā, gnawa, ḥamadsha, ʿisāwa, tuhāma and ahl-Tuwāt. A substantial part of this work is based on Meknes’ fieldwork, and outlines salient features of the most important male and female spirits, evoked in the therapeutic rites of the brotherhoods. Furthermore, it devotes specific attention to spirit possession ceremonies and the role women play within them.

Questo studio è la prima parte di un’indagine più vasta che esplora il rapporto tra rito, musica e genere in Marocco, e che si articola in due libri diversi ma complementari. Questo primo libro si occupa del più ampio contesto sociale e culturale in cui si situano le pratiche rituali maschili e femminili. Combinando ricerca storica ed etnografica, il testo offre una panoramica del culto dei santi in Marocco, al fine di evidenziarne la profondità sociale e culturale, e anche di delineare alcuni importanti significati legati a questi culti. Vengono inoltre illustrate le principali caratteristiche, le cerimonie private e pubbliche e le attività musicali delle confraternite religiose di Meknes. In particolare, quelle strettamente legate ai culti di possessione, ai riti terapeutici e alla musica: jilālā, gnawa, ḥamadsha, ʿisāwa, tuhāma e ahl-Tuwāt. Una parte sostanziale di questo lavoro si basa sulla ricerca sul campo a Meknes, e delinea i tratti salienti dei principali spiriti maschili e femminili, evocati nei riti terapeutici delle confraternite. Inoltre, dedica una specifica attenzione ai riti di possessione e al ruolo delle donne al loro interno.
