The history of the collection of Hebrew manuscripts once gathered by Heymann Joseph Michael in Hamburg and now preserved at the Bodliean Library in Oxford (whereas the printed books have been acquired, after Michael's death, by the British Museum, now British Library) is reconstructed in some detail. Several highlights of the collection are described and illustrated. The importance of the collection for the history of Jewish Studies in the 19th century is evaluated upon studying the friendship between Michael and Leopold Zunz, the father of the Wissenschaft des Judentums and the generations of scholars who have catalogued this collection, in particular Michael himself, Moritz Steinschneider and Abraham Berliner.

Abstract
The history of the collection of Hebrew manuscripts once gathered by Heymann Joseph Michael in Hamburg and now preserved at the Bodliean Library in Oxford (whereas the printed books have been acquired, after Michael's death, by the British Museum, now British Library) is reconstructed in some detail. Several highlights of the collection are described and illustrated. The importance of the collection for the history of Jewish Studies in the 19th century is evaluated upon studying the friendship between Michael and Leopold Zunz, the father of the Wissenschaft des Judentums and the generations of scholars who have catalogued this collection, in particular Michael himself, Moritz Steinschneider and Abraham Berliner.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
