The Belgian novelist André Baillon’s style makes abundant use of repetition, whether it is to stage the quest for simplicity, as in Histoire d'une Marie (1921), or to mime the surge, as in "Des Mots” (Délires, 1927). Through the analysis of these two exemplary texts, this article shows that, within the vast set of repetitive stylistic phenomena, some of them hels the reader to put in order both ideas and structure discourse, giving them unity and a certain rhythm. On the other hand, others phenomena have the opposite effect: they are destructuring, destabilizing. The classifications established by Madeleine Frédéric in La Répétition. Étude linguistique et rhétorique (1985) and in La Répétition et ses structures dans l'œuvre poétique de Saint-John Perse (1984) are used to illustrate how repetition is declined in Baillon's style.
