The paper provides elements for a reflection on how some conventional aspects of crime prevention and of the management of security policies at the local level are developing, and which are the Italian peculiarities in the field of the 'new' crime prevention. It also explores the specific nature of public policies of this type of local programmes, and their characteristics and roles in the broader local governance of crime and disorder
