The imposing remains of the walls of Phoinike and Butrinto have attracted the attention of visitors and scholars for centuries. The research conducted by the Italian Archaeological Mission in the last century laid the foundations for subsequent studies, based mainly on the analysis of building techniques. The recent Italian-Albanian excavations in Phoinike and the various international projects in Butrinto finally allow us to review the interpretation in the light of archaeology. A new topographic survey of the walls of Butrint, carried out using laser scanning methodology, produced a new mapping of the state of conservation and an updated analysis of building techniques. An attempt can therefore be made to compare the various phases of the construction of the walls that defend the two epirus sites. If in Butrint there are archaic and classical phases, unknown to Phoinike, with the Hellenistic age some affinities emerge linked to the development of the region under the Eacid dynasty and then in the period of the Epirotic koinon. However, some historical and archaeological considerations, combined with the few archaeological data in our possession, allow us to reassess this urban development also in relation to the arrival of Rome.
