The paper outlines the results of the first exploratory survey on the attitudes of Italian researchers to their interactions with mass media and the general public, and conducted at two interdisciplinary research institutions. The findings point to a significant variety in scientists' attitudes towards the media an the public, wich relate to different patterns of engagement in relevant activities, as well as to different models and conceptions of the science/media/public interaction
