In the Terramare culture (17th-12th century BC - Middle-Recent Bronze Age) casting pits and other metallurgy-related structures are very infrequent, partly because of their low preservation potential. Moreover, if these structures are “clean” the identification of casting pits can also be difficult in archaeological contexts. Through experimental archaeology activities, empirical observations and chemical-physical analyses on experimental samples it has been possible to verify the presence of metallic elements on the external layers of casting pits, which can be useful for identifying this kind of structures in archaeological contexts.

Abstract
In the Terramare culture (17th-12th century BC - Middle-Recent Bronze Age) casting pits and other metallurgy-related structures are very infrequent, partly because of their low preservation potential. Moreover, if these structures are “clean” the identification of casting pits can also be difficult in archaeological contexts. Through experimental archaeology activities, empirical observations and chemical-physical analyses on experimental samples it has been possible to verify the presence of metallic elements on the external layers of casting pits, which can be useful for identifying this kind of structures in archaeological contexts.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
