The article discusses different aspects of the origin of semiotics: in particular, the question of boundaries, the evolutionary antecedents of language and the preconditions for its appearance. The symbolic and communicative functioning of gestures are considered, as well as the role of emotions and narrativity. Two alternative models are described and discussed based on innateness or emergence of meaning.
