Focusing on the early-medieval period in the Syrian region, this article aims to discuss the place Christian churches occupied in Muslim discourse and practice. The case of the city of Aleppo will be at the core of the discussion, though evidence will be also supplemented by other towns. The Muslim attitude toward churches moved from admiration and respect to the desire for replacing them with mosques to reusing some of the material of which churches were made and decorated.
