Il Carme di Ildebrando. Un padre, un figlio, un duello

The book deals with the Old High German poem Hildebrandslied (The Lay of Hildebrand) also giving a new translation. The study first examines the history of the codex which transmitted the poem, highlighting paleographic and codicological aspects that explain the reasons for copying the lay in a theological manuscript of the Carolingian age. The second chapter contextualizes the poem in the Carolingian cultural context of the German monastery of Fulda, a copying center for Old High German texts, including the Hildebrandslied. The third chapter deals with the complex theme of the linguistic aspects of the song connected with the different hypotheses on the origins of the song itself; then follows a detailed commentary on the text, both linguistic and historical-cultural, first presenting the characters of the poem (some historical, such as Theoderic the Great and Odoacer), then the poem is discussed by thematic sections. The fifth chapter deals with the main themes of the poetic text, proposing a new approach that holds cultural instances linked to the motivations of the poem in an aristocratic-warrior context and those, successive, linked to more properly Christian interpretations that characterized reception and copying the text in the monastery of Fulda. Finally, the last chapter deals with the fortune of the lay in the medieval and modern age and its contemporary rewritings. The book is closed by the new verse translation with the front text, revised and re-proposed after a close check of the manuscript.

Il volume si occupa del componimento poetico alto-tedesco antico Hildebrandslied (Carme di Ildebrando) offrendone anche una nuova traduzione. Lo studio prende dapprima in esame la storia del codice che ha trasmesso il carme, mettendone in luce quegli aspetti paleografici e codicologici che permettono di spiegare le ragioni della copiatura della canzone in un manoscritto di argomento teologico in età carolingia. Il secondo capitolo contestualizza il carme nel contesto culturale carolingio del monastero tedesco di Fulda, centro di copiatura di testi alto-tedeschi, fra cui il Hildebrandslied. Il terzo capitolo affronta il complesso tema dei tratti linguistici della canzone connessi con le diverse ipotesi sulle origini stesse del carme; segue poi un articolato commento al testo, sia di ordine linguistico che storico-culturale presentando dapprima i personaggi del carme (alcuni storici, come Teoderico il Grande ed Odoacre), poi il carme discusso per sezioni tematiche. Il quinto capitolo tratta invece dei temi principali del testo poetico, proponendo un nuovo approccio che tiene distinte istanze culturali legate alle motivazioni del carme in un contesto aristocratico-guerriero e quelle, successive, legate a chiavi di lettura più propriamente cristiane che hanno caratterizzato la ricezione e la copiatura del testo nel monastero di Fulda. L'ultimo capitolo tratta infine della fortuna della canzone in età medievale e moderna e delle sue riscritture contemporanee. Chiude il volume la nuova traduzione in versi con il testo a fronte, rivisto e riproposto dopo un serrato controllo del manoscritto.
