The increasing use of prosthetic materials both in open and laparoscopic abdominal hernia repair has focused the discussion on the behavior of the materials used in this kind of surgery. It is clear that the use of prosthetic material always induces, in a variable percentage due to the material used, the formation of adherences, with an increase in the postoperative morbility, as the apparition of enterocutaneous fistulas or bowel occlusion. Our study was aimed to investigate the reaction of the intraperitoneal organs to various prosthetic materials in rabbits, to indentify the material the more nearby to the "ideal" mesh, that is to say to find the mesh with less inflammatory reaction and less adherence formation.
