The Chapter describes a methodological approach to plan, evaluate and drive renovation/retrofitting actions aimed to improve energy efficiency and living conditions of the existing building stock and particularly of energy-poor household. The chapter is aimed to provide a general overview of renovation processes, taking into account barriers and drivers to deliver successful interventions, some technological solutions and design strategies to comply with European Directives. The chapter includes a synthetic brief on the context and background with relation to residential renovation at European level, a description of the proposed methodology developed by the Architectural Technology Research Unit of the Department of Architecture of University of Bologna, and some case study/examples.
