The project is the continuation of a long standing joint research work in the Swat Valley of Northern Pakistan, which the author directs since 2000. The main themes on which the research has been carried out are the reconstruction of the history and environment of the Swat Valley, from protohistory to the Islamic period. Special care has been also dedicated to conservation activities, particularly now that civil war makes scientific activity impossible. The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs attributes a special importance to this activity in Pakistan, both for its scientific and political implications.
