The author reviews the archaeological information on Gandharan area, with updated sources regarding especially the activity of Pakistani archaeologists. He then explains the situation of human settlements in Gandhara and the Swat Valley at the moment when Gandharan art was initiated, posing the bases for a socio-political interpretation of the fortunes of Buddhism. The role of urban settlements appears extremely important, linked to the wealth of merchant classes, and is associated to princely patronage of the Sakas. Archaeology brings a fundamental contribution to this problem.
