This chapter explores the cohesion and discipline of political parties in parliamentary democracies with multi-dimensional, multi-party competition. The chapter identifies intra-party factions as sources of structure in intra-party politics. Focusing on the important left wing Italian party DS, the empirical analysis shows a systematic relationship between factional affiliation and patterns of legislative roll call voting.
