The original Hebrew Name of Jesus was not considered problematic during the Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Itbecame the object of controversies during the Renaissance, with the developement of a Christian interest for Hebrew Language and literature and especially due to the emergence of Christian Kabbalah. The article examines the beginnings and the history of the different theories concerning the authentic Name of Jesus and its meaning. From a peculiar perspective a history of Renaissance Hebraism on the verge of Reformation appears in transparence. The "Jewish Jesus" moves to the centre of theological debate from an unexpected vantage point.
