The distribution and the morphology of pons-medullary neurons projecting to the lumbo-sacral spinal cord in the cattle was investigated with the fluorescent retrograde tracer technique. The experiments utilised three male Fresian calves. Fast Blue (FB) was injected at L6-S1 spinal cord levels. After 7 weeks, the animals were sacrificed. The brainstem was removed and fixed. Tissues were cut on a freezing microtome in serial transverse sections and observed with an epifluorescence microscope. The number of the FB labelled neuron of the lateral vestibular nucleus (LVN) and the reticular formation (RF) was measured. Morphometric analysis of FB labelled nerve cells was carried out. Labelled neurons belonging to the LVN were multipolar, triangular, fusiform and fork in shaped and showed a wide area range (860-5180 μm2). The RF showed an high number of scattered or well organised neurons with various morphology (area range 340-3600 μm2).
