The essay addresses a variety of topics concerning opinion surveys concerning politics and election, especially voters’ intentions. The issues explored include the purposes of political-electoral polls, regulations (in Italy and other Western countries) governing the publication of poll findings, the methodological challenges faced by pollsters (especially as regards recent developments). The essay also includes an empirical analysis of pre-election polls’ performance in the 2013 and 2018 Italian parliamentary elections. The text is an updated and significantly longer version of a chapter with the same title in the 2014 volume "Le ricerche di mercato negli anni della discontinuità", by Giorgio Marbach, Toruni: UTET-Wolters Kluwer.
