A study of Thucydides’ historical narrative through the theme of naval warfare. Thucydides provides a rigid and partially artificial characterization of the Athenians and their enemies in terms of naval expertise, which allows him to strongly polarise racial differences and cultural rivalries as a reflection of this theme. The study deals with the figure of the epibatai and their unclear cultural recognition by ancient sources as soldiers possessing features typically attributed to hoplites.
