The diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) took a major step forward in 2012, as Food and Drug Administration approved the first positron emission tomography tracer. In parallel to radiotracers, fluorescent probes have attracted the attention of medicinal chemists for their greater versatility and lower cost. Recently, however, a strategy relying on specific therapy based on molecular diagnosis has been formed. In this context, the so-called theranostic small molecules, which finely integrate therapeutic and imaging functionalities, emerge for their potential to simultaneously image and treat AD. Furthermore, they might streamline the complex drug discovery process and advance personalized medicine in this devastating disease.
