Waste is generated by activities in all economic sectors involving loss of materials and energy and imposes economic and environmental costs on society for its collection, treatment and disposal. Each material has its own chemical and physical characteristics, environmental impact, recycle and re-use options. Waste management can be performed according to an integrated system, which includes reuse, recycling, composting, incineration with energy recovery, and safe disposal, with the objective of the maximum recovery of matter and energy and the minimum impact on the environment. This paper gives an overview of the trend in waste generation and management in Europe and in Italy, of the principal waste treatment processes and of environmental control supporting management decisions.

Abstract
Waste is generated by activities in all economic sectors involving loss of materials and energy and imposes economic and environmental costs on society for its collection, treatment and disposal. Each material has its own chemical and physical characteristics, environmental impact, recycle and re-use options. Waste management can be performed according to an integrated system, which includes reuse, recycling, composting, incineration with energy recovery, and safe disposal, with the objective of the maximum recovery of matter and energy and the minimum impact on the environment. This paper gives an overview of the trend in waste generation and management in Europe and in Italy, of the principal waste treatment processes and of environmental control supporting management decisions.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
