The ATRIUM European Cultural Route deals with the intangible and tangible heritage of the totalitarian regimes of the 20th century. The signals that this “dissonant” heritage sends to the present are often complex and contrasting, since they deal with the difficult relationship between an architectural and urban legacy and its use in a democratic present. What should be done with this heritage, which is often abandoned or in need of restoration? This is the question that ATRIUM posed to local administrators, professionals of the sector and citizens. In particular, the critical historical view of the past that is developed through cultural tourism cannot exist without also substantial reflection on the issue of restoration. The Manual of Wise Management, Preservation, Reuse and Economic Valorisation of Architecture of Totalitarian Regimes of the 20th Century (Forlì/Ljubljana, 2013) produced for the Cultural Route as part of the original ATRIUM project, constituted a first step. In Forlì, a debate was launched in association with the Italian Association of Architectural and Industrial Heritage (AIPAI) and the establishment of a “Restoration of Modern Architecture Group” involving people from different disciplines and representing a variety of institutions in order to look in depth at the issues which emerge in this area. The work of the group included a series of thematic workshops in Cesenatico, Forlì and Predappio (an area which constitutes a cultural district of modern architecture unique in Italy), whose task was to examine specific problems in a concrete context. The multidisciplinary nature of the topic and the different urban contexts examined have led to a focus on different problems and approaches according to the type of building and the urban context in which it is to be found. The workshops, visits and the meetings with specialists and representatives of local authorities have enabled the complexity of this heritage to emerge and have led to a process of awareness on the part of those involved. The first results of the work of the group consist of a seven-point guideline presented in the exhibition “Cesare Valle. Un’altra modernità: architettura in Romagna”. These “Guidelines for the Restoration of Modern Architecture” constitute a final product that is based on participation and exemplifies ATRIUM’s commitment not only to producing results, but also to promoting the full involvement of all the interested parties and thus the sustainability of the route.

Il Manual of Wise Management, Preservation, Reuse and Economic Valorisation of Architecture of Totalitarian Regimes of the 20th Century (Forlì/Ljubljana, 2013), prodotto per l’Itinerario Culturale nell’ambito del progetto originale di ATRIUM, ha costituito un primo passo.
