The topography of the terminal oesophagus was evaluated in 12 German Shepherd dogs with particular emphasis on the localisation of the gastro-esophageal junction and the cardia with respect to the phreno-oesophageal ligament. The results showed that, considering the terminal oesophagus at the level of the gastro-oesophageal junction, only 3 of 12 dogs examined exhibited an intra-abdominal oesophagus whereas, if the cardia was considered the terminal oesophagus, in 7 of 12 dogs an abdominal oesophagus existed. The second option is preferable, as it is better explicative of the function of the intra-abdominal pressure within the caudal oesophageal sphincter to prevent the gastro-oesophageal reflux.

Abstract
The topography of the terminal oesophagus was evaluated in 12 German Shepherd dogs with particular emphasis on the localisation of the gastro-esophageal junction and the cardia with respect to the phreno-oesophageal ligament. The results showed that, considering the terminal oesophagus at the level of the gastro-oesophageal junction, only 3 of 12 dogs examined exhibited an intra-abdominal oesophagus whereas, if the cardia was considered the terminal oesophagus, in 7 of 12 dogs an abdominal oesophagus existed. The second option is preferable, as it is better explicative of the function of the intra-abdominal pressure within the caudal oesophageal sphincter to prevent the gastro-oesophageal reflux.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
