FACIES. Urban Architectures

Facies refers to the ability of architecture to enable, by means of its outward appearance, interaction between the space occupied by the building and the setting within which it is found. Architecture – Gio Ponti argues – is made to be looked at. Because through the facades, architecture is a public landscape. The facades are the street walls and a city is made of streets. Restoring the facade to the world of meaning means shifting the role of the building from object to subject, elevating it beyond the exclusive need to meet a set of requirements. However, architecture, to be recognized as such, shouldn’t represent, signify, or symbolize something other than itself, but provide a process generating form that organizes and builds its own assumptions within disciplinary autonomy. The world of forms thus refers to the wealth of architectural knowledge from which it draws nourishment and thanks to which it generates new forms.

Facies si riferisce alla capacità che ha l’architettura di far interagire, attraverso il suo aspetto esteriore, la spazialità dell’edificio e il contesto all’interno del quale esso si colloca. L’architettura – sostiene Gio Ponti – è fatta per guardarla. Perché l’architettura è paesaggio pubblico, attraverso le facciate. Le facciate sono le pareti della strada, e di strade è fatta una città. Restituire la facciata al mondo dei significati significa spostare l’edificio dal ruolo di oggetto a quello di soggetto innalzandolo oltre l’esclusiva necessità di assolvere ad una serie di esigenze. L’architettura per essere riconosciuta come tale non deve tuttavia rappresentare, significare, simboleggiare altro da se stessa ma offrirsi per mezzo di un processo generativo della forma che si strutturi e costruisca i propri presupposti all’interno dell’autonomia disciplinare. Il mondo delle forme in questo modo fa riferimento al patrimonio conoscitivo dell’architettura, da cui attinge nutrimento e grazie al quale genera nuove forme.​
