This chapter traces the origins and development of the Greek alchemical tradition from the first centuries CE up to the Byzantine period, when the most important collections of alchemical texts were compiled. The writings included in these anthologies are presented within their historical context and analyzed in relation to the emerging idea of alchemy (chēmeia) as the art for transmuting base metals into silver and gold.
