The chapter is a close critical reading of the semiotic notion of Encyclopaedia in the work of Umberto Eco. Starting with a reconstruction of the origin and development of the idea of Encyclopaedia as a form of meaning representation, the analysis discusses further developments of the notion in the framework of a larger semio-cultural approach. Some problematic aspects are taken into consideration, as well as possible commonalities with the most recent developments of the theory of enunciation.
