The Adumbrationes are Latin fragments, which contain Clement of Alexandria's exegesis of four of the so-called 'Catholic Epistles': 1Pet., Jude, 1John and 2John. The author of these fragments was Clement but we have them only thanks to the Latin translation commissioned by Cassiodorus in the 6th century. These four long texts are traditionally considered as part of Clement's Hypotyposeis-i.e. the abridged commentary on the Holy Scripture, which Eusebius attested to the Alexandrian. Nevertheless recent researches present at least three kinds of problems in this consideration of the nature of the Adumbrationes. Thus, after a general presentation of the Adumbrationes, in this paper I would like to: 1) Discuss the difficulty of identifying these texts with parts of Clement's Hypotyposeis; 2) Formulate the thesis that the Adumbrationes are parts of Clement's Hypotyposeis provided that we consider both Adumbrationes and Hypotyposeis as notes Clement took to develop further theoretical discussions.
