Il pennello di Cupido. Il dottor Meige e il mal d’amore nella pittura olandese del Seicento

In Seventeenth-Century Netherlands, lovesickness (or love melancholy) supposedly spreads like an epidemic. This is confirmed by dozens of paintings reproducing in a serial way the doctor's visit to lovesick patients, with few but significant changes. The book, retracing part of this disease's history, investigates the function of images and imagination in its genesis and therapies; it examines some paintings, not previously adequately discussed in Italian scientific literature, and pays tribute to the French neurologist Henry Meige, who, in 1899, published a long and smart article about paintings on lovesickness. Through history of art, medicine and poetry, the book proposes a voyage in the iconography of this a cultural topos, supposing eterodox versions of Warburgian perpective or harmonious reconciliations between different interpretative approaches about Golden Age art.

Nell’Olanda del Seicento il mal d’amore, o melanconia amorosa, parve diffondersi come un’epidemia. Lo testimoniano decine di dipinti che ripropongono in maniera seriale il motivo della visita del dottore alle malate d’amore con poche ma significative varianti. Il volume, ripercorrendo parte della storia di questa malattia, indaga la funzione delle immagini e della fantasia nelle sue genesi e terapie, esamina alcuni dipinti finora poco trattati nella letteratura scientifica italiana e rende omaggio al neurologo francese Henry Meige, che, nel 1899, pubblicò un testo acutissimo sulle manifestazioni del mal d’amore per interposta pittura. Tra storia dell'arte, medicina e poesia, tragedia e commedia, il volume invita a un viaggio nell’iconografia di questo topos culturale, ipotizzando varianti eterodosse del metodo warburghiano o armoniose riconciliazioni tra le scuole interpretative dell’arte olandese del Secolo d'oro..
