Major natural events must be characterized in terms of their hazard, that is, their ability to cause significant harm. Although there have been attempts to predict the occurrence of natural events, uncertainties still exist with respect to large-scale natural events due to their complexity. Furthermore, for Natech risk analysis, a simplified event characterization is needed. This chapter focuses on the characterization of selected natural hazards which were found to be relevant with respect to impacts at industrial installations, that is, earthquakes, floods, and, due to recent events in Japan, tsunamis.

Abstract

Major natural events must be characterized in terms of their hazard, that is, their ability to cause significant harm. Although there have been attempts to predict the occurrence of natural events, uncertainties still exist with respect to large-scale natural events due to their complexity. Furthermore, for Natech risk analysis, a simplified event characterization is needed. This chapter focuses on the characterization of selected natural hazards which were found to be relevant with respect to impacts at industrial installations, that is, earthquakes, floods, and, due to recent events in Japan, tsunamis.
