The aim of this paper is a review of the main archaeological evidence which characterizes Ravenna between 751 and 967, when the city was conquered by the Lombards and the rule of the exarchate ended, moving the city towards a new place as centre of the imperial idea of power by the German emperors. The chronological framework of the paper ends with the journey of Emperor Otto to Ravenna, where he held the famous meeting with Pope John XIII and the most important European elites. These two events, over two centuries, frame one of most complex period in terms of material culture in the history of the city, a period which one could define as the history of an ‘invisible’ city
