Abstract

The research focus on confronting educational beliefs toward democratic promotion of students’ competences in school in teachers who were trained in an educational perspective and in teachers that weren’t. The surveys – carried out by the means of two self-filled questionnaires sent by ordinary mail – have taken place in the 1999 and 2006 on two representative samples of teachers from Emilia Romagna (northern Italy Italian region). First sample is composed by in service senior teachers and second is composed by novice in service teachers trained in the new University postgraduate course for teachers. The issue of teacher’s beliefs on education has always constituted a key-element to interpret the waves either to renewal or to conservation in the school. The overview delineated from the comparison of the results of these surveys offers the opportunity to study more deeply some problematic points of a school teachers’ knowledge that often resists changing. Nowadays, in the first decade of the years Two thousand, these critical points must be even more looked inside in order to understand the more efficient ways to support the school system and its teachers in the route towards a public school “of quality for anybody”.
