Introduction

The pursuit of new paths for development, being one of the main challenges in the contemporary world, is a central pillar of European policies. In this regard, the dialogue with China, an outstanding protagonist of the global processes, at all levels, is crucial for both Europe and China. The interplay between EU and China is determining a growing role, in the shaping of global system of norms, for a more sustainable and smarter type of development. Starting from these premises, this book following and interdisciplinary approach, explores the definition of new paths of development, that are shaping the new concept of smart development, initiating an enquiry about the role that EU/China cooperation may have in contributing to a new, shared and inclusive, model of development.
