This study analyses the relationship between harmonization of Private International Law (PIL) pursued at the universal level and the EU regulations adopted in the frame of the EU cooperation in civil matters. After a first paragraph, devoted to the multilevel unification of PIL, the study investigates the Europeanisation of PIL and its impact on the adoption of uniform rules at the regional and universal Level; the Interaction between EU PIL and other PIL uniform instruments; the EU PIL as a tool for the establishment of an Area of Freedom, Security and Justice; the EU and uniform instruments in the field of international trade, and draws some final remarks on the future perspectives of the unification of PIL.
