The editors – a contemporary historian and a political scientist – have tried to react to and redirect the ongoing scientific debate on administrative detention centres for migrants: hence the idea behind gathering scholars from different disciplines and from different countries, and experts on different European national cases, in order to increase understanding of the divergences in approaches in the South and the East. These are scholars who strongly believe that the question of centres within and around the EU is a European issue and that, to fully understand it, a broad, multidisciplinary and long-term vision is necessary. The interaction among disciplines should help answer the questions that emerge throughout this volume
