This paper aims to provide a new interpretation of CIL XI, 6940, an inscription in Piacenza originally belonging to a family funerary monument with tambour which can be dated back to the Augustan Age. I shall comment on the various steps of the cursus undertaken by three male characters remembered by the sepulchral epigraphy, which will be analyzed in relation to epigraphic writings that appear on monuments similar in terms of typology, dating and geographical context of discovery. I will propose a possible interpretation of the phrase "a populo" in the cursus of the dedicant of the inscription.

Abstract

This paper aims to provide a new interpretation of CIL XI, 6940, an inscription in Piacenza originally belonging to a family funerary monument with tambour which can be dated back to the Augustan Age. I shall comment on the various steps of the cursus undertaken by three male characters remembered by the sepulchral epigraphy, which will be analyzed in relation to epigraphic writings that appear on monuments similar in terms of typology, dating and geographical context of discovery. I will propose a possible interpretation of the phrase "a populo" in the cursus of the dedicant of the inscription.
