Floods are amongst the most costly and deadly of natural disasters resulting in enormous damages worldwide. This chapter provides an overview of flood events and flood characteristics. The different physical processes that can lead to a flood event are summarized. The different flood processes are of importance since different flood processes can be expected to occur in different parts of the world and lead to very different types of flood events with different implications for flood management and flood mitigation. The chapter ends with a summary of approaches for estimating flood magnitudes as well as a discussion of design floods and national flood estimation guidelines.
