In this paper, I would like to examine the role played by teachers during the Great War in Italy, focusing attention on the case of the city of Bologna. Based on an ample bibliography and many archive and printed sources of the period, the focus will be placed on the role played by teachers in the form of propaganda and assistance given to students and their families. Teachers not only in senior schools but also in primary schools will be analysed, particularly concerning the concrete assistance provided to children and promoted by the Socialist and neutral municipal administration, including school holiday camps, educators, open-air schools and nurseries for the soldiers' children. Thus the social function of assistance and education during the Great War, supporting childhood and adolescence, through the efforts made particularly by teachers, will be underlined.
