Language learning evalutation and testing are always controversial within institutional practices. In this contribution we will display the research and development steps followed in the conception and validation of SELF – Système d’Evaluation en Langues à visée formative, in its six different languages (Italian, English – already deployed on more than 4,000 students – Japanese, Chinese, Spanish and French), with particular emphasis on the approach followed according to the cycle of testing. We will focus on the application of the validity and usefulness principles and we will sketch a frame for qualitative validation.
