Abstract

The topos of Rome's metus Punicus reflects the archaeologically confirmed naval rearmament of Carthage preceding its destruction. The fear of a Punic invasion is also confirmed in the Livian reconstruction of this period, for instance in the Romans' decision to destroy the fleets of defeated enemies.
