This paper concerns the problem of authorship of Solon’s transmitted poems. Through an oral tradition many elegies (and iambus) circulated under the ‘authorial’ and ‘authoritative’ name of Solon in attic symposia until a definitive writing redaction. We argue that the first script of Solon’s poems is made by aristocratic circles in the first half of V century and we make some hypothesis about the symposiac poet who composed a Solonian Sylloge which was the base text for the circulation of Solon’s poems until the Hellenistic period.

Abstract

This paper concerns the problem of authorship of Solon’s transmitted poems. Through an oral tradition many elegies (and iambus) circulated under the ‘authorial’ and ‘authoritative’ name of Solon in attic symposia until a definitive writing redaction. We argue that the first script of Solon’s poems is made by aristocratic circles in the first half of V century and we make some hypothesis about the symposiac poet who composed a Solonian Sylloge which was the base text for the circulation of Solon’s poems until the Hellenistic period.
