The chapter discusses the definition and different uses of the notion of "smart city", starting from a semantic analysis of the conceptual field of "smartness". Main focus of the article is a critical discussion of the transformations of urban public space with the intrdoduction of different forms of new smart technologies, and the effrects these technologies might produce in relation to the issue of civil participation.
