Wolves and the werewolf theme are present in Finnish folklore and literature from the ancient oral poetic tradition and mythology to contemporary literature. The wolf is a totemic and highly symbolic animal, whose cultural meaning is widely understood. In Finnish folk poetry, animals like wolves have a close connection to humans, and the division between the human world and the animal world is often blurred. The wolf is mentioned at various points in the Kalevala, the Finnish epic poem, as in mythical folktales. In modern and contemporary Finnish literature the werewolf theme evolves into a more psychological way of depicting metamorphosis, expressing the internal conflict, duality and the aggressive otherness of the feminine figures.

Abstract
Wolves and the werewolf theme are present in Finnish folklore and literature from the ancient oral poetic tradition and mythology to contemporary literature. The wolf is a totemic and highly symbolic animal, whose cultural meaning is widely understood. In Finnish folk poetry, animals like wolves have a close connection to humans, and the division between the human world and the animal world is often blurred. The wolf is mentioned at various points in the Kalevala, the Finnish epic poem, as in mythical folktales. In modern and contemporary Finnish literature the werewolf theme evolves into a more psychological way of depicting metamorphosis, expressing the internal conflict, duality and the aggressive otherness of the feminine figures.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
