The present contribution focuses, in the framework of the historic and economic context, on the coins of Turgar (738-750 CE), the last Sogdian king of Samarkand before the definitive conquest of the region by the Arabs. Turgar issued a series of copper coins, which circulated abundantly along the Zeravšan Valley, while only few silver coins bearing his name are actually known. The recent discovery of some new silver exemplars with interesting typological variants, makes necessary a general revision of the coinage of this weak sovereign.

Abstract

The present contribution focuses, in the framework of the historic and economic context, on the coins of Turgar (738-750 CE), the last Sogdian king of Samarkand before the definitive conquest of the region by the Arabs. Turgar issued a series of copper coins, which circulated abundantly along the Zeravšan Valley, while only few silver coins bearing his name are actually known. The recent discovery of some new silver exemplars with interesting typological variants, makes necessary a general revision of the coinage of this weak sovereign.
