X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) experiments at the XAFS 11.1 beamline have permitted to study the local geometry of Co, Ni, and Mn sites in a new high voltage cathode for lithium batteries. The material is a solid solution between Li2MnO and Li(x)Mn0.4Ni0.4Co0.2O2. A series of electrodes with different lithium concentration have been studied. Data at the three different metal edges have allowed us to identify which metal is taking part in the electrochemical reaction and to verify the local structural changes around each metal site
