The contribution is aimed at highlighting some stylistic peculiarities of Roman declamation, but takes into consideration also the Greek texts, which offer a useful term of comparison. In particular, our attention focuses on the structure and function of the sententia, on some kinds of metonymy often exploited by declaimers, and finally on the so called paradiastolé, a rhetorical figure by which the declaimer’s point of view emerges indirectly through “false definitions” assigned to his opponent.

Abstract

The contribution is aimed at highlighting some stylistic peculiarities of Roman declamation, but takes into consideration also the Greek texts, which offer a useful term of comparison. In particular, our attention focuses on the structure and function of the sententia, on some kinds of metonymy often exploited by declaimers, and finally on the so called paradiastolé, a rhetorical figure by which the declaimer’s point of view emerges indirectly through “false definitions” assigned to his opponent.
