This chapter deals with logistics and supply chain management as strategic discipline to support strategic infrastructure and operative decisions on freight transportation. A list of main issues and problems are illustrated. A not exhaustive list of examples is reported with a special focus on food supply chain and logistics of perishable products whose shelf-life and quality/safety issues significantly increase the level of complexity of the decisional process. This process involves strategic, tactical and operational short-terms decisions. Challenges and future perspectives of logistics, operations and freight transportation are collaboration, integration, intermodality and sustainability.
