In this chapter, we examine one common technique employed by questioners to present for attention views which are potentially hostile or damaging to the podium and/or his clients. These tend to be attributed to third party sources. This technique is yet another form of footing shift, since when the questioner attributes an opinion to others they are changing their participant status in the communicative event.

Abstract

In this chapter, we examine one common technique employed by questioners to present for attention views which are potentially hostile or damaging to the podium and/or his clients. These tend to be attributed to third party sources. This technique is yet another form of footing shift, since when the questioner attributes an opinion to others they are changing their participant status in the communicative event.
