In general alphabets and writing systems have, for a long time, been a cultural choice. Nowadays the use of one alphabet over another is increasingly a political choice. The Cyrillic alphabet is also subjected to this process. Designed for a Slavic language, the Cyrillic alphabet has a significant geographical spread and is used for languages belonging to several linguistic families. Unlike the Latin alphabet, Cyrillic rarely uses diacritics to render phonemes not covered directly by its letters but, instead, uses alternative solutions such as modification of the graphic form of the letter or combinations of more letters. Cyrillic demonstrates a remarkable vitality and adaptability, and the adopted choices only rarely make reading difficult.

Abstract
In general alphabets and writing systems have, for a long time, been a cultural choice. Nowadays the use of one alphabet over another is increasingly a political choice. The Cyrillic alphabet is also subjected to this process. Designed for a Slavic language, the Cyrillic alphabet has a significant geographical spread and is used for languages belonging to several linguistic families. Unlike the Latin alphabet, Cyrillic rarely uses diacritics to render phonemes not covered directly by its letters but, instead, uses alternative solutions such as modification of the graphic form of the letter or combinations of more letters. Cyrillic demonstrates a remarkable vitality and adaptability, and the adopted choices only rarely make reading difficult.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
